Your City Has A Subreddit And Nobody There Has Heard Of You

Somewhere on Reddit right now, someone in your city is asking for exactly what you sell. "Anyone know a mechanic who will not rip me off?" "Best place for a birthday cake that is not a grocery store?" "Looking for a roofer, had a bad experience last time, who do you trust?"

The thread will get thirty replies from locals. Some will name businesses. Your competitors might get mentioned. You will not, because nobody in that thread has ever seen you anywhere on Reddit. And that thread is going to sit in Google search results for years, answering the same question for every person who searches it after.

City Subreddits Are The New Town Bulletin Board

Almost every city and a lot of towns have their own subreddit. Bigger metros often have several, one for the city, one for the suburbs, one for a specific neighborhood or a nearby college.

These communities are busy. People post about traffic, new restaurants, local news, what is going on this weekend, and constantly, recommendations. Who is a good dentist, where do I get my car detailed, which gym is worth it, who fixes old furniture. The answers come from neighbors, and people trust them more than ads because nobody in the thread is getting paid.

If you are a local business, that is some of the most valuable word of mouth on the internet, and most businesses have never posted a single thing there.

Reddit Threads Live In Google For Years

Here is what makes this bigger than one thread. Google pulls Reddit discussions into its search results all the time now. Search "best plumber in" plus almost any city and you will often see a Reddit thread on the first page, sometimes above the business websites.

That means a recommendation thread from last spring is still working. Every person who searches the question finds the thread, reads the answers, and calls whoever got mentioned. If your name is in it, that is free leads for years. If it is not, every one of those searches goes to someone else.

You cannot buy your way into those threads. You earn your way in by being a business that people on Reddit have seen and liked.

Reddit Hates Ads And Rewards Usefulness

Reddit is not like the other platforms, and businesses that treat it the same way get burned fast.

Redditors can smell a sales pitch from a mile away. A post that says "Check out our amazing spring special!" in a city subreddit will get downvoted, called out, and probably removed. Most local subreddits have strict rules about self promotion. Some ban it outright. Some allow it only in a weekly thread set aside for local businesses.

What Reddit does reward is genuinely useful content. A short video from a local HVAC company explaining how to tell if your furnace filter needs changing before winter. A bakery showing how their sourdough gets made at four in the morning. A mechanic explaining the three noises you should never ignore. Those posts get upvotes, comments, and real goodwill, because they are not asking for anything.

Read The Rules Before You Post Anything

Every subreddit has its own rules, usually in the sidebar or the About section. Read them first, every time.

Look for whether self promotion is allowed, whether there is a dedicated thread for local businesses, and whether video posts are allowed at all. Some subreddits only allow text posts. Some require you to have been active in the community before posting your own content. Some ban any account that only ever posts about its own business.

Following the rules is not optional. Breaking them gets your post removed, and doing it again gets your account banned from the community, which closes that door for good.

Show Up As A Neighbor First

The businesses that do well on Reddit act like members of the community, not advertisers in it.

Answer questions in your area of expertise, even when they do not lead to a sale. A landscaper explaining why someone's lawn has brown patches, with no pitch, earns more trust than any ad. Share things that are interesting to locals, like the history behind your building or what your street looked like thirty years ago. When you do post your own video, make it the kind of thing someone would want to see even if they never hire you.

Over time, people start recognizing the name. That is when the recommendations start. Someone asks for a good electrician and three people tag the one who has been answering wiring questions for months.

The Same Videos Work Here Too

You probably already have content that would work on Reddit. The how to videos, the behind the scenes clips, the explanation of what a job really involves. Those are exactly what local communities find interesting.

The difference is in how it gets posted. On Reddit, the title matters enormously, and it needs to sound like a person talking, not a brand. "Local roofer here, this is what hail damage actually looks like up close" will do far better than a caption copied from Instagram. No hashtags. No walls of emoji. No hard sell.

When your videos are already going out across TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook, adding Reddit is not a new content problem. It is a distribution step, with the right title, posted where the rules allow it.

One Good Thread Can Outlast A Year Of Posts

On most platforms, a post has a shelf life of a few days. On Reddit, a helpful thread in your city subreddit can keep sending people your way for a very long time, because it keeps getting found in search and keeps getting linked whenever someone asks the same question again.

That makes Reddit one of the few places where a single afternoon of genuinely helpful posting can still be paying off next year.

Watch How Locals Talk About Your Industry

Even before you post, a city subreddit is worth reading regularly. It shows you, in plain words, what people in your area worry about when they hire someone like you. It is free market research, updated every day.

You will see the complaints. The contractor who never called back. The shop that quoted one price and charged another. The restaurant that changed its menu and lost the dish everyone loved. Every one of those complaints is a video idea. If people keep saying they cannot find a mechanic who explains what is wrong, a short video where you explain exactly that is going to land, on Reddit and on every other platform your neighbors use. The subreddit tells you what to film. The rest of your platforms carry it to the whole town.

Find Your Subreddit Today

Search Reddit for your city name. Then search it for your city plus your service, like "Austin plumber" or "Boise cake." Read the threads that come up. Note which businesses get recommended and why.

You will see what your neighbors care about, what they complain about, and who they trust. That is a better map of your local market than any survey you could pay for, and it shows you exactly where your next customers are already asking for you.
