Look at the analytics on your best video and you will see likes, comments, and views. Somewhere in there is a share count, and it is probably small enough that you never paid attention to it. Thirty shares. Maybe fifty.
What those numbers do not show is where those shares went. A share is someone sending your video straight to a friend, a spouse, a family group chat, or a neighborhood thread. You will never see those conversations. But that is where a lot of real buying decisions get made, and it is one of the signals the platforms care about most.
A Share Is A Personal Recommendation
A like costs nothing. It is a quick tap while scrolling. A comment takes a little more effort. But a share means someone thought about a specific person and decided your video was worth sending to them.
"This is the guy I was telling you about." "We should do this to the backyard." "Is this the place your sister used?" Every share comes with a little bit of personal endorsement attached. The person receiving it is not seeing an ad. They are seeing something a person they trust picked out for them.
That is word of mouth, happening in private, at scale. And for a local business, it might be the most valuable thing a video can do.

The Platforms Weigh Shares Heavily
The platforms know shares matter. The head of Instagram has said publicly that sends, people sharing a post in direct messages, are one of the strongest signals Instagram uses to decide whether to show a video to people who do not follow you. TikTok and YouTube also treat shares as a sign a video is worth pushing further.
It makes sense. A share is proof that the video was useful or interesting enough for someone to put their own name behind it. When a video gets shared a lot relative to how many people saw it, the platform shows it to more people.
So that small share count is not small at all. It is often the number that decides how far the video goes.
You Cannot See It, But Your Customers Feel It
The hard part about shares is that you rarely get credit for them. Nobody leaves a comment saying "I sent this to my wife." The video quietly travels through private messages, and weeks later someone calls and says they heard about you from a friend.
They might not even mention the video. The friend sent it, they watched it, they remembered your name, and when they needed you, they searched for you. From your side, it looks like a referral. It was actually your content doing the work.
This is why it is a mistake to judge your videos only by the numbers you can see. Some of your most effective videos are working in places you will never have access to.
Make Videos People Want To Send
People share things that are useful, surprising, or made for someone specific. If you want more shares, make more of those videos.
Useful videos answer a question someone in their life has been asking. "Three things to check before you buy a used car." "What to do in the first ten minutes after a pipe bursts." People send those to friends who need them right now.
Surprising videos show something people did not know. The hidden damage behind a wall. The amount of dirt that comes out of a carpet that looked clean. People send those because they want to say "look at this."
Specific videos speak to one kind of person. A video for new homeowners gets sent to every friend who just bought a house. A video about prom hair gets sent around every group chat of high school juniors in town.
Make It Easy To Share
A few small things make sharing more likely. Say who the video is for in the first seconds, "if you just bought a house, watch this," so viewers instantly think of someone. Put your business name on screen so the person receiving it knows who you are even without the caption. Keep it short enough that someone will actually watch it when a friend sends it. And give the video one clear point, because a video that is easy to sum up in a sentence is easy to send with that sentence attached.

Every Platform Feeds A Different Group Chat
Here is the part most businesses miss. Each platform's share button sends your video into a different set of private conversations.
Facebook shares go into Messenger and family groups, which skew older. Instagram shares go into DMs between friends. TikTok shares go to TikTok messages and get copied into text threads. YouTube videos get their links pasted into texts and emails. Reddit posts get linked in group chats about local stuff.
If your video only lives on one platform, it can only travel through that platform's network of conversations. The same video on every platform can be shared into every one of them. A mom on Facebook sends it to her sister. A college student on TikTok sends it to roommates. A homeowner on YouTube texts it to a spouse. Each of those is a different person who might never see you on the platform where you usually post.
Local Videos Travel Furthest In Local Chats
For a local business, the most valuable shares happen in group chats where everyone lives nearby. The neighborhood moms' chat. The group text of guys from the same church. The family thread where everyone lives within twenty minutes of each other.
A video that mentions your town by name, shows a street people recognize, or talks about a local problem, like the potholes on Main Street or the hard water everyone complains about, is far more likely to get sent into those chats. Local pride is one of the strongest reasons people hit share. Make it obviously local, and the people who share it will be sending it straight to your future customers.
Ask Where People Heard About You
You cannot see shares directly, but you can catch the results. Ask every new customer how they found you, and listen for answers like "a friend sent me your video" or "my husband showed me something you posted."
Write those answers down. Over a few months you will start to see which kinds of videos travel the most, and which platforms they seem to come from. That tells you more about what is working than any like count.

One Share Can Be Worth More Than A Thousand Views
A thousand random views might bring zero customers. One share into the right group chat might bring three. That is the math of private sharing, and it is why spreading your videos across every platform matters so much. Not every video needs to go viral. It needs to land in the right chat.
The more places your video lives, the more chances someone has to find it and think of a person who needs to see it. Make the videos worth sending, and then make sure they are on every app where somebody might hit that share button.
