Reddit Sends Buyers And You Have Never Posted There Because Somebody Told You It Was Not Worth It

Ask most business owners about Reddit and you get some version of the same answer. It is hostile. They hate self promotion. It is not really for business. Somebody tried once, got downvoted into oblivion, and the story spread until it became conventional wisdom.

Meanwhile Reddit threads sit at the top of Google for exactly the questions your customers type before they spend money. Best software for X. Is Y worth it. Has anyone used Z. Those threads get read for years by people actively deciding where to put their money, and almost none of your competitors are in them either, for the same reason you are not.

The conventional wisdom is half right. Reddit does punish promotion. It just does not punish participation, and the distinction is the entire game. Nearly everyone who failed on Reddit failed by walking into a community and behaving like an advertisement.

Reddit Users Are Further Down The Funnel Than Anyone Else

Think about the mental state difference across platforms. Someone on TikTok is being entertained. Someone on Instagram is browsing. Someone on Reddit typed a specific question into a search bar because they are trying to make a decision and they want opinions from real people rather than a company.

That last person is worth more than the other two combined. They have identified their problem, they are researching solutions, and they are explicitly looking for a recommendation. When they find a thread where someone explains the tradeoffs clearly and knows what they are talking about, that comment carries more weight than any ad you could run at them.

This is why the traffic converts at rates that surprise people the first time they see it. It is not more traffic. It is often much less. But it arrives pre-qualified in a way that discovery-feed traffic never does, and it keeps arriving for years because search does not forget.

The Rule Is Actually Simple

Reddit is not complicated. Be useful first, and be a person while you do it.

A post that answers the question thoroughly, admits what your thing is bad at, and mentions your product once as one option among several will do fine in most communities. A post that reads like marketing copy gets removed in an hour. The line is not subtle, and people fail it because they cannot resist optimizing every sentence toward the sale.

The other rule is community fit. Every subreddit has its own norms about what counts as acceptable, and reading a few weeks of posts before you contribute tells you everything. Some allow direct promotion on specific days. Some want you to have history before you link anything. Ignoring these is what gets people banned, and then they go tell everyone Reddit does not work.

Your Existing Content Already Contains Reddit Posts

The barrier people imagine is that Reddit requires writing, and writing is a whole separate production line they do not have time for. That is not quite true.

You already make content that answers questions. A video where you explain a common mistake in your industry is a Reddit post, once you write out the same explanation as text in a community where people ask about that mistake. The thinking is done. The expertise is the same. What changes is the format and the tone, because Reddit wants a person talking, not a script being read.

That translation is real work, but it is much less work than generating a new idea from scratch. And unlike the video, the Reddit version can keep pulling traffic for years, because it lives in search results rather than a feed that forgets it by tomorrow.

The Competitive Situation Is Unusually Good

Here is what makes this worth acting on now rather than eventually. The reason nobody is doing it is the reason it works.

On Instagram and TikTok you are competing with every business in your category plus professional creators plus whatever else is trending that day. The shelves are packed. On Reddit, in the specific communities where your customers ask questions, the field is mostly empty. Genuine expertise stands out immediately because there is so little of it, and because the platform's reputation keeps most businesses from ever trying.

That gap does not stay open forever. Every year more businesses figure out that Reddit threads dominate search results for buying-intent queries, and the communities get more crowded. The people who built history in those communities early have an advantage that late arrivals cannot buy, because Reddit credibility is earned over time and cannot be purchased.

The Comment Is Often Worth More Than The Post

One thing people get wrong when they finally try Reddit. They focus entirely on creating posts, when most of the available value is in comments on threads that already exist.

Search your industry's common questions and you will find threads from six months ago, a year ago, three years ago, still getting traffic from Google, with answers that are thin or outdated or plainly wrong. Adding a genuinely good answer to a live thread takes ten minutes and requires no audience at all. If it is good, it rises, and it gets read by everyone who finds that thread from search for as long as the thread ranks.

New posts have to fight for attention in a busy community on the day you publish. Comments on ranking threads inherit traffic that is already flowing. For a business with no Reddit history, comments are also how you build the account credibility that makes your later posts acceptable in the first place.

It is the least glamorous work in your entire marketing operation and it quietly outperforms most of the rest.

Why This Belongs In A Distribution System, Not A Separate Project

The trap is treating Reddit as its own initiative. Someone decides to get serious about Reddit, spends two weeks posting, sees modest results because the traffic compounds slowly, gets bored, and quits. Almost everybody who tries it in isolation follows that arc.

It works better as one destination among seven. The same underlying content goes to TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Rumble, and Reddit, each in the form that platform wants. Reddit is not a project competing for attention with everything else you do. It is just another surface your work lands on, and it happens to be the one that quietly keeps sending buyers eighteen months later.

Finding The Threads That Are Worth Your Time

The last practical piece is knowing where to show up, since Reddit is enormous and most of it is irrelevant to you.

Start from search rather than from Reddit itself. Take the questions your customers ask you before they buy, type each one into Google with the word reddit on the end, and see which threads come back. Those threads are ranking, which means they get steady traffic from people with exactly that question, which is the only signal you need.

Note the communities those threads live in. That is your list, usually five or six subreddits, not fifty. Read them for a week before you contribute anything so you learn what gets upvoted and what gets removed. Then answer questions in your list, consistently, without linking to anything for the first stretch.

The whole setup takes an afternoon and the list barely changes over time. Compare that to the effort of learning a new video format, and it becomes clear that Reddit is avoided out of reputation rather than difficulty.

You do not have to believe Reddit is the best platform. You only have to stop believing the story that it is not worth trying, because that story was written by people who walked in advertising and got the response advertising deserves. The people quietly doing it right are getting the customers who were researching before they bought, and they are getting them from threads they posted a year ago.
